Try out MacDown 3000? #1357

Description

@schuyler

Hi, all. As a fellow MacDown fan, I’d like to share the pre-release of MacDown 3000, a reboot of the open source Markdown editor we all know and love.

I recently downloaded the latest build of the original MacDown and was disappointed by show-stopping bugs and a recent lack of maintenance. I looked for alternatives, but I’ve been unable to find a desktop Markdown editor for macOS that I liked as much as Mou or MacDown. I was impressed to see how many other folks on Reddit and other forums seemed to feel the same way.

So I decided to invest a little time and money in trying to bring Tzu-ping Chung’s original MacDown up to date, fix some bugs, and make it usable on Apple silicon Macs. The result is MacDown 3000, with a name chosen to acknowledge the heritage of, as well as the differences from, its beloved predecessor.

I regard MacDown 3000 as essentially already feature complete, but I’m open to contributions from developers who want to add functionality. My plan is to maintain a regular release, focusing on stability, correctness, performance, and modernized dependencies.

I think there’s still a place in the macOS landscape for a lightweight desktop Markdown editor with live preview that focuses on doing one thing and doing it as well as possible. MacDown 3000 is made for everyone out there who agrees.

We need beta testers. Please download the app, give it a try, and share your feedback.

Finally, I want to thank Tzu-ping Chung, and all the contributors, to the original MacDown, for their work and their commitment to Free and Open Source Software.

I hope you enjoy it!
