Vespucci has started beeping yesterday (see #3311 (comment)) every time I put it in the background by android navigation button

Expected Behaviour

no beeping if there is no reason for it, like it didn't beep before. Or at least an accompanying toast message if that beep is due to some error / warning.

How to recreate

• open Vespucci
• click on standard android navigation button to put Vespucci in background & open launcher
• beep is heard

Crash dump submitted (no or yes + date)

No other app beeps when I background them, and I have no sounds/haptic feedback on keypresses or any other clicks enabled. It beeps even when DND is enabled.

I've been able to find few issues related to beeps, but they are allegedly resolved #1207, #1269, #3169

and documentation mentions beep for connected real keyboard -- which I don't have.

There are not many places where a beep is issued from the app, from the map display it is only when you long click in simple mode, but you don't even have that turned on. We log an unknown shortcut so you could try sending a crash dump immediately after the beep, but that is a long shot as the app then has to resume first. You could check if you get a beep from any other activity, for example from the debug screen.

When you say "send a crash dump", do you mean using debug / send debug info, or something else?
(because there is no crash happening, just beep). Anyway I did now:

• open Vespucci
• click minimize (go to launcher, "circle" button) android navigation button (which made a beep again)
• open Vespucci again
• clicked on debug / send debug info and typed mnalis ALTernative as OSM username and clicked "OK". (on few seconds before Fri Jul 17 07:20:00 CEST 2026)

You could check if you get a beep from any other activity, for example from the debug screen.

No, entering "Debug" screen nor clicking send debug info there does not produce any sound. I have also not been able to produce sound in response on any other clicking in Vespucci¹

What is interesting is that the beep is only produced if I use android navigation to minimize the app (go to launcher) when I am on the main map screen.

If I try to minimize while in "debug" screen, or while inside settings screen, or have any other menu open, then no beep is produced.

I've also tried disabling all the layers (hoping it might be one of them that causes the beep), but the beep when minimizing Vespucci is still there. Any other ideas I could try to help debug it?

Also:

• if I exit Vespucci via android "back" button (when Vespucci shows "are you sure you want to exit?" confirmation window), there is no beep.

• There is also no beep when using android "recent apps" button to switch to another map.

• When starting the Vespucci in safe mode (with first two options enabled by default), and using android background (launcher) navigation button, the app still beeps

I checked both dumps you submitted and they don't go back far enough, just to be on the safe side: are you using anything else at the same time that is generating audio, or do you have GPS tracking turned on?

According to Gemini there at least as one point a notification option that would beep is a paused app had a running service (in this case that could be the GPS tracking service), but U haven't found such an open on the Android 15 emulator so I suspect that is something the AI is dreaming up.

no, nothing else uses audio, the phone is silent otherwise

or do you have GPS tracking turned on?

No. It is paused (it was last used maybe a week or two ago) but not cleared though (i.e. option Resume GPX track is not disabled, so I could resume recording gpx if I wanted)

I don't see any Vespucci notification in the drawer, and I seem to recall it is usually there where recording the GPS track.

But I did start noticing the beeping relatively closely (withing few days) of the time I last used GPX recording in Vespucci...

I've tried using android "Force stop" on Vespucci to make sure it is fully killed (should it kill all of its stray services?), and cleared all recent apps.
But on next cold start on Vespucci, it still beeps when being put into background.

Just if it isn't clear: you should normally not do that, particularly if you have lots of layers as you may kill it while it is still saving state (leading to issues when it starts up again). The normal "back nutton" exit will terminate everything eventually, the system may simply wait bit.

I know, it is clear. I don't usually ever do it, and only did it once here after:

• making sure no Vespucci data was non-uploaded
• clearing Vespucci data
• exiting vespucci normally (with back + confirmation)
• waiting 10 seconds
• then force-stopping

And I did it just to rule out that "Gemini" possibility you mentioned (e.g. stray background service somehow remaining running and causing the beeps)
