Behaviour/Symptoms

When adding the photo layer I see a whole bunch of camera icons on the map. The placement of the icons matches the photos I've taken. However, most of these icons are red and 2 of them are green. Opening/viewing the green ones works like it should. Trying to open/view one of the red ones will open the photo viewer of one of the green ones, but not the one I tapped.

I figured this might have something to do with permissions. So I tried enabling "Always allow all" photos and videos permissions.
I also tried sharing specific photos from the gallery app to Vespucci.
Both methods did not make the camera icons show up as green. Even after reindexing.

Also, pressing the next arrow in the photo viewer will only iterate through the green photos, not the red ones.

Expected Behaviour

I expect all camera icons to show up green and allow me to view them in the app.

If a camera icon is red and Vespucci is not able to view the photo I expect an error shown to me describing (in technical terms or not) why the photo failed to be viewed.

How to recreate

I'm unsure how to reproduce this state on another phone. I might've started out using "Limited access" for photo permissions and only allowing those (now) green photos. Somehow this is cached(?) on my phone.

Red icons are the normal unselected color, green is the selected image (there should only be one). You definitely need to allow access to all photos and probably need to reindex the layer after doing that.

Do you have mediastore indexing enabled?

I have sent debug info if that helps.

I also tried deleting cache and data before force quitting, but it seems didn't also didn't help. The 2 photos from before are the only ones that keep popping up. I cannot get any others to work.

I'm still confused why Vespucci can access the locations of all photos, but cannot open the photos themselves.

Is there some way to get logs or errors from Vespucci without a laptop or root?

If you go to the photo layer in the layer control there's a reindex menu entry you should run that. The crash dump will potentially contain relevant log entries if something is going wrong though specifically the logging during indexing is minimal.

I have submitted debug info right after finishing a photo scan. I hope it contains more useful information.

OK, back, sorry for the wait.

The 2nd log didn't catch anything interesting, but the first did contain you selecting an image /storage/emulated/0/DCIM/Camera/IMG20260719150408.jpg and I'm assuming nothing was displayed, but the viewer did start up? Unluckily there is no indication of any kind of error, so it is fairly wide open what the actual issue is (it could range from the library we use to display images having an issue, to an unreported permission issue).

Just to narrow things down, could you disable https://vespucci.io/help/en/Advanced%20preferences/#use-builtin-photo-viewer (ignore the typo that has been fixed) and see if the image is displayed? If the image doesn't contain anything sensitive could you send it to info at vespucci.io so that I can check locally that there is nothing special about it (I doubt but worth checking).

Yes! Using an external viewer works!
I've send you an email with a photo where the internal photo viewer did not work. But otherwise, I'm alright closing this for now, as my usecase is solved.
