Advanced Property Search - Technical Implementation

Overview

This document provides a comprehensive technical reference for the advanced property search feature in Rentars, including architecture, APIs, database schema, performance optimization, and implementation details.

Feature Summary

The advanced property search system provides:

  • Full-text search using PostgreSQL vectors with GIN indexing
  • Multi-criteria filtering (price, location, capacity, amenities, dates)
  • Result sorting (newest, price ASC/DESC, distance, rating)
  • Geolocation-based queries using PostGIS
  • Search analytics with autocomplete suggestions
  • Performance optimization with Redis caching and strategic indexing

1. Advanced Search

Endpoint: GET /api/v1/properties/search/advanced

Query Parameters:

2. Search Suggestions

Endpoint: GET /api/v1/properties/search/suggestions

Query Parameters:

  • q (string, required if > 1 char) - Search prefix
  • limit (number, optional) - Max suggestions (default: 10)

Performance Optimization

Caching Strategy

  • TTL: 60 seconds
  • Key Format: search:{JSON.stringify(filters)}
  • Invalidation: On property create/update/delete

Query Optimization

  • GIN index on search_vector for O(1) text search
  • B-tree index on (query, created_at) for suggestions
  • Pagination to prevent large result sets
  • Composite indexes on frequently filtered columns

Database Tuning

  • GIN index for full-text search vectors
  • BRIN or B-tree indexes on location columns
  • Statistics gathering on search_analytics
  • Connection pooling recommendations

Migration Instructions

1. Enable PostGIS

Security

Input Validation

  • Search terms sanitized for SQL injection
  • Query parameters validated
  • Array filters checked for valid values

Data Privacy

  • Optional user ID for analytics
  • No sensitive data stored in search_analytics
  • Rate limiting ready

Parameterized Queries

  • All database queries use parameterized statements
  • No string concatenation for SQL
  • Supabase client handles escaping

Troubleshooting

Search Returns Empty

  • Check search_vector column exists
  • Verify GIN index was created
  • Ensure trigger is updating search_vector

Autocomplete Not Working

  • Verify search_analytics table exists
  • Check suggestions endpoint returns data
  • Review Redis connection if caching

Slow Geolocation Queries

  • Ensure PostGIS extension installed
  • Check location column populated
  • Verify geography index exists
  • Consider smaller radius for testing

Cache Not Updating

  • Check Redis connection
  • Verify cache invalidation triggers
  • Monitor cache hit/miss ratio
