Any plans to support pgoutput in addition to wal2json?

For a quick glance at the Postgres docs¹, it seems like pgoutput is only meant to be used to replicate between Postgres databases:

PostgreSQL logical decoding supports output plugins. pgoutput is the standard one used for the built-in logical replication.

since it's easier on the server

do you know of any benchmarks that corroborate this? If it's a significant difference, I think more users in general would be interested in switching.

I could be missing something, but since the tap emits schema messages that adapt from run to run, that would already be supported, right?
