Refactoring

The recent pull requestst dealt a lot with merge conflicts. This is often a result from large files being edited on multiple branches.

This is to me an indicator of lacking abstraction and tight coupling of the code within these large files.

I think, if we want to improve this package we should do a refactoring into smaller files, for example one module per function/class and build a more injection-based solution.
