Add GEOS-IT bias meteorological forcing and extend MERRA-2 lapse rate support #1760
Description
This enhancement adds a new GEOS-IT bias metforcing option. This forcing dataset was developed by @fadjimaina, and includes GEOS-IT meteorological forcings that are bias-corrected using MERRA-2 climatology to allow seamless LIS simulations when transitioning from MERRA-2 to GEOS-IT forcing.
In addition, updates are made to the MERRA-2 lapse rate reader to support:
- new configuration options for specifying lapse rate file prefix and suffix
- use of lapse rate files defined over sub-global (regional) domains, smaller than the global MERRA-2 forcing domain
The GEOS-IT bias metforcing support was developed by @fadjimaina, based on the existing GEOS-IT code base.
Kristen Whitney integrated the GEOS-IT bias forcing into LISF and implemented the MERRA-2 lapse rate reader updates.
Testing by @fadjimaina and Kristen Whitney included sanity checks to verify correct lapse rate file reading and application, and short LIS runs using both MERRA-2 and GEOS-IT bias forcings with dynamic lapse rates enabled.
