migrate great circle tests to use cmake and existing test system #1496

Describe the changes
With PR #1475, we have some testing of the great-circle calculations. These tests were implemented with a simple bash build system.
This issue is to document that this test should be migrated into the broader testing environment and the cmake based build system that @adrifoster and others have created.
