App isn't detecting browser actions

What happened?

i tried logging in and nothing happened when i clicked authorise and continue in the browser, so i just tried continuing as guest and installing mods through the app and it didn't detect that either. I got no idea whats wrong but my best guest is because i was using steamtinkerlaunch's vortex before this, although i have fully uninstalled it im pretty sure

It sounds like you are missing the custom scheme handler defined in your desktop entry. I had the same issue and fixed it by creating an entry for it manually. Here is the file:

Note that you probably have to adjust the contents of this file depending on your setup.

Usually, the location should be /usr/share/applications/nexusmods.desktop for globally installed applications and ~/.local/share/applications/nexusmods.desktop for user installations.

This is the relevant section: MimeType=x-scheme-handler/nxm;. If you want to make sure you no longer have a handler for steamtinkerlaunch's vortex, you can look inside those two folders for an entry that contains the scheme handler definition. You can use this command to check:

grep -rl --include="*.desktop" "x-scheme-handler/nxm" /usr/share/applications ~/.local/share/applications 2>/dev/null

If you manually create the entry, you typically have to update the “database” so the system knows there is a new file to consider. The command for this varies depending on the desktop environment in use. A restart should do the trick.

i tried putting the .desktop file in the globally installed spot but i didnt have permission even though im the sole user of this computer? ToT so i put it in the user spot but nothing happens even after restarting a few times.

oh and i moved the vortex .desktop folder just to my documents so it shouldnt interfere now

Before GNOME will accept the .desktop file you created in ~/.local/share/applications, you need to ensure it has the correct ownership and permissions.

Since you created the file in ~/.local/share/applications, it should be owned by your user. You can ensure this with:

chown "$USER:$USER" ~/.local/share/applications/nexusmods.desktop

Next, set the correct permissions so that it is readable and executable. A common permission set is 755:

chmod 755 ~/.local/share/applications/nexusmods.desktop

Once that is done, you can manually refresh the desktop entries with (or restart):

update-desktop-database ~/.local/share/applications

The entry has been created successfully when it appears in the launchers search result (probably without logo) :
