Pilot feedback #12

We attempted to use the Notebooks Now template to create a publication for AGU Earth and Space Science Commentaries. The document was the most simple test case possible: one markdown file for the article with one figure. The documents rendered really nicely with the exceptions of a few bugs. The following is the feedback from our attempt at it. Much of this is captured in this issue.

  • The template requires an apt.txt that will install texlive-bibtex-extra (for Linux) and perhaps one or two other LaTeX packages, or something equivalent like MacTex for Mac, to install the necessary LaTeX libraries for compiling the tex files. See this comment for more details on our fix. Adding the library clears this error (Build failure. File 'apacite.sty' not found) and allows the documents to build.

The html version of the book builds beautifully as expected, however, there are two bugs that we found in both the PDF and LaTeX builds:

  • Both PDF and LaTeX do not properly distinguish between parenthetical citations and narrative citations (\citep and \cite), making all references appear as narrative citations, despite them showing up accurately in the HTML version. See this comment for an explanation and this one for an example in the attached article.pdf. The citations showed up as errors in Markdown Preview within our JupyterHub as well and also when we tried switching to the DOI format for citing; doi:10.5281/zenodo.6476040 and do not render properly in Markdown Preview though we did not test these approaches for the PDF and LaTeX builds.

  • In the built document author affiliations, nothing except the affiliation name is transferred to the LaTeX or PDF documents built, but informations listed under department and country should show up in an AGU publication. You can however circumvent this bug by putting all of the information under name with commas. The output of this is also found here in the attached article.pdf.
