extend the unit tests for the desktop source to reach at least 80% of
Statements, Branches, Functions and Lines

From the discussion and merged PR's, it looks like some unit tests were added as part of #1330. but the overall desktop coverage still appears below the target described here.

I'd like to work on incrementally improving unit test coverage for the desktop source files starting with menu.js. Please let me if that's Okey.
