Canon Selphy CP1500 driverless image cropped

Describe the bug

I use a Canon Selphy CP1500 with IPP driverless to print photos from my homemade Raspberry photobooth but I am unable to correclty print my photos with borderless setting.
With lpr, when I use media=Postcard I have white margins (expected) but with media=Postcard.Borderless my prints are always cropped.
I tried to play with the print-scaling and scaling option but the result is always the same.

I will attach the original image file and the print result with media=Postcard.Borderless (I added in the picture the 12345 text background to be able to see the cropping issue.

I also tried to convert the jpeg file to PDF but I have the same issue.

Expected behavior
Using media=Postcard.Borderless should print the original image without white margin but also without cropping (or cropping a little if image ratio is wrong and print-scaling is fill).

How is your Canon Selphy CP1500 set up and connected? Is it on the USB of the Pi or is it connected via Ethernet or Wi-Fi? Is the printer by itself driverless and so the CUPS on the Pi sees it and makes it automatically available? Or is the printer using a classic driver (Gutenprint) and the Pi, sharing the print queue is your driverless IPP printer to which you print from your desktop computer?

From where did you send the print commands? From the Raspberry Pi or from some client desktop computer?

Could you attach the PPD file which the CUPS on the Raspberry Pi uses (in /etc/cups/ppd/, to attach here on GitHub please rename the file adding .txt to the end of the name)?

If your Canon is a driverless IPP printer, could you do the following:

On the Pi run the command

driverless

This command should display the URI of your printer.

Then run the command

ipptool -tv URI get-printer-atributes.test > attrs.txt

with URI replaced by the URI from the first command and attach attrs.txt.

My Canon Selphy CP1500 is connected by Wifi using IPP driverless (static IP).
The printer has official IPP Everywhere support based on the official website.
CUPS makes it automatically available, I do not use Gutenprint driver or custom PPD file.

I send the lpr command from the Pi, this is where the printer is configured in CUPS.
I do not use or want to share of this printer for other computer, the printer is only configured and used on the Pi.

Sorry, I also missed your typo 😜

I forgot to mention that CUPS also automaticaly add my printer thanks to mDNS (I guess) but I use the one manually configured with manual IP 192.168.4.2.

Please do the following:

cp /usr/share/cups/ipptool/get-printer-attributes.test all.test

In all.txt modify the line

ATTR keyword requested-attributes all,media-col-database

to be

ATTR keyword requested-attributes all

and in media-col-database.test modify the line

to be

Then run the following to commands:

Thank you very much! Now your printer has given its best about its capabilities.

Note that your printer is one of the few where one cannot request both the "all" and "media-col-database" attributes on a "get-printer-attributes" IPP request to the same time. Most printers allow that and so the original "get-printer-attributes.test" instruction file works. Therefore I have asked you for editing the instruction file to make 2 separate requests and this worked.

In attr-all.txt one sees that the attributes

        media-bottom-margin-supported (integer) = 0,...
        media-left-margin-supported (integer) = 0,...
        media-right-margin-supported (integer) = 0,...
        media-top-margin-supported (integer) = 0,...

are missing. Every other printer which I have dealt with has these attributes. A printer with borderless capabilities usually has 2 comma-separated numbers per attribute, a zero for the borderless mode and the actual border width (in 1/100 mm) for the non-borderless mode. If the printer does not support borderless, there will be only one number for the actual border width.

The only way for the filters to discover the actual margins is the "media-col-database" attribute which lists all possible combinations of paper size dimensions, margins, paper types, and paper trays (file attrs-media-col-database.txt, attribute is in a single, veeery loooong line).

It seems that the filters cannot cope with this and need to get appropriately fixed.

From your side you have done everything needed for now. We will now investigate what exactly happens and how to support a printer with this attribute output.

As you have installed cups 2.4.7 and cups-filter 1.28.17 from source, could you please use the newest stable versions?

These are:

• CUPS 2.4.13
• libcupsfilters 2.1.1
• libppd 2.1.1
• cups-filters 2.0.1

Please build and install them in the given order.

I use these versions (of Ubuntu 25.10) and for me all seems to be correct, as

cupsfilter -p Canon_SELPHY_CP1500.ppd -m image/urf -o media=Postcard.Borderless -o print-scaling=fill image-with-2x3-ratio.jpg > out.urf

gives the correct result for me, the picture filling the page completely. If I use a picture which has another aspect ratio, 4:3 for example, print-scaling=fill cuts off a part at the borders to make the photo fill the page, while print-scaling=fit leaves white borders on 2 sides to assure that nothing of the picture gets lost. All that is working correctly for me.

Please try above cupsfilter command line. Does it give the correct result with your current installation? Does it work when updating all the components to their newest stable versions?

Thank you for your instructions!
In order to avoid breaking my existing Pi I tried your steps on another Debian server.
First I "apt remove purged" everything related to cups.
After that I git clone every repo and git checkout every repo on the correct version.
I configure-make-make install each package in the correct order without any issue.
But the driverless command seems to be broken 😕
