Server OS update to linux/unix

I will make atlas and maps servers available for OS conversion. However, the desktop GIS (BAGIS Pro) has ArcGIS Pro dependency on the server. We will need to move the scheduled NWCC AWDB webservices update script to a different computer when basins server is ready for OS update. The reasons for the OS update are: developers prefer linux dev environment and servers' Windows Server 2016 OS will deprecate soon (1/12/2027).

Are you planning to migrate basins to linux/unix too? If so, yes we will need to move the NWCC AWDB webservices update task to a different Windows computer. This script currently has no dependencies to atlas and maps. Please let me know the details of the basins replacement computer when available.

And for the record, not all developers prefer Linux DEV environment :-)

Understood, I'll try not to break anything. Is the NWCC AWDB webservices update task code in the AWDB repo up to date?

As stated earlier, the NWCC AWDB webservices update task doesn't have to be hosted on a server. We just need to find an always-on computer that has ArcGIS Pro to update the AWDB webservices. We probably can put it on VSC B1-11-1. The update involves the following steps:

1. Download data from AWDB
2. Convert the downloaded data into GIS format
3. Stop the AGOL AWDB webservices
4. Overwrite the AGOL AWDB webservices
5. Restart the webservices

ArcGIS Pro provides geoprocessing tools to perform most of the steps.

I don't see an answer to my question about whether basins will eventually be converted to Linux. If so, are we planning to continue having ArcGIS server running on Basins and serving the webservices that BAGIS-Pro currently relies upon? The usages of these webservices by ArcGIS Pro is more difficult to unravel than moving the awdb script to another computer.

I'm fine with hosting the script on VSC B1-11-1 as long as we're sure that the system will always be available at 5:00a on Sunday mornings. And also if the directory that stores the script and data is backed up on a regular basis. Yes, the scripts in the AWDB repo are current. It's no problem for me to move them when this is imminent. Setting up the Windows task scheduler is the only piece of this I'm not super familiar with.

The plan is to upgrade basins to linux as well. ArcGIS Enterprise (i.e., ArcGIS Server) runs on Linux. We can host the webservices on basins after the migration. That should have little or no impact on BAGIS-Pro.

Are we going to stand up an ArcGIS server on one of the other Linux servers before upgrading basins? I would like to test how BAGIS-Pro runs using at least one imageservice from an ArcGIS server running on Linux before upgrading basins. If there are any issues, there isn't an easy recovery plan after basins is swapped over.

The plan is to set up ArcGIS Server on the maps server first. I will provide a timeline when the maps server is migrate to Linux.

Another dependency is the server needs to have a web (http and https) server and an ftp server set up. The snodas data are delivered to the ftp server daily. Many project data and reports are also shared with NWCC through the ftp server. ArcGIS Server relies on the web server to share the GIS data online.

Installing ArcGIS server on Linux sounds like something we should do early in the process. We would run a webserver as well and prove all the services work before shutting down anything on windows. Then it's a relatively small matter of switching the names and eventually shutting down the windows services.
