Can you post your speed and direction PID values please?
The wiggliness will be the PID for direction overshooting, it likely needs a lower P value.
The slowness will be the PID for speed, which might need higher values.
The two PIDs will interact, as the faster it is travelling forward, the less time it will have to react to direction changes, so the direction PID values likely need to be higher.

Sorry for the delay, I have just returned from travel.
My repo has all my latest code (PID values, etc). All the values are (intended to be) just what you have in your book manuscript.
And I agree with all your advice about how to chase down and optimize the PID values. My reason for mentioning it was primarily to alert you that the values in the book result in this performance. I was just about to undertake this when my robot stopped working (#26).
