Permanent needs the notification-service to be able to send push notifications to the mobile apps, [permanent-android](https://github.com/PermanentOrg/permanent-android) and [permanent-ios](https://github.com/PermanentOrg/permanent-ios). We plan on using [Firebase Cloud Messaging](https://firebase.google.com/docs/cloud-messaging) to handle the platform-specific processes for sending push notifications. Broadly, notification-service will call FCM APIs, and FCM will deliver messages via Apple Push Notifications (APN) or the Android transport layer (ATL); see also the [FCM Architecture Overview](https://firebase.google.com/docs/cloud-messaging/fcm-architecture).
