Please add some example of use

There is not much documentation on hackage or in the code, it would be nice to have some example of usage like for this analogue in go.

The only example I found was this old thread in the mailing list, which I tweaked to get to type-check. However, I cannot get output on my midi keyboard. What am I missing?

Since it is a plain and simple C binding, you should consult the C library for its API documentation.

That being said, some example would be nice to have. But I'm no longer developing this library, so I do not have any good example at hand, and I'll be glad to accept any pull requests. The library was initially developed for Euterpea project, and some (non-trivial) usage can still be found in the current Euterpea2 source code.

It is sad that the original C library is no longer being developed either, and it is definitely growing outdated as OSes are gradually deprecating old APIs. I don't have pointers to any good quality alternatives at this moment.

I do recommend you give Euterpea2 a try. It should auto-detect MIDI devices if you can get some of the HSoM example programs to run.

That being said, Midi support on different OSes is flaky, and whether PortMidi can be made to work is process of trial and error.
