Audit and refactor table constructions

Templates for tables were first written when some nww (new to us) XSL techniques became available.

There may be excessive parameter-passing and excessive use of recursion (or recursion that can be improved).

Look carefully and see where the code can be streamlined. Perhaps from the bottom up.
