Should the current canvas navigation/title overlay conditionally disappear?

This is for future thought and discussion but we suspect that not everyone is going to like that the overlay containing the canvas navigation, canvas title, and (if turned on) zoom controls is always visible at the bottom of the current canvas:

We might want to consider a strategy of fading away the overlay after N seconds of no user activity with the canvas, for example, and redisplaying it as soon as the user interacts with the canvas in defined ways (or changes canvases).
