Renaming album preserves the old album in export as well

Hi,

I'm testing osxphotos on my Library to create a back-up to my NAS in case I lose my external SSD with the Photos library.

I'm using this command.

/Volumes/incoming/test is a Synology directory mounted via NFS (SMB was really slow!) on a SSD

Yesterday i've exported the Library and it gave me allot of errors on one specific album that had the letter ë in it. I've since renamed the album in Photos to include the letter e instead of ë.

Now I've run the export command again with the --cleanup flag. I would expect the old album with ë in it to be removed. But now both albums are exported and nothing is cleaned from these albums.

The cleanup worked for other (e.g. Synology eadir structure) type of files/directories.

Question

1. Is this intended behaviour of the --cleanup flag?
2. What do I might miss in the command to be able to restore a Photos backup that you recommend I should add to the export command?

This should not have happened as osxphotos takes a lot of care to try to preserve all unicode characters when exporting. Do you recall what the specific errors were? This might have something to do with the export volume or NFS. @oPromessa uses a Synology with unicode characters so he might have some insight.

But now both albums are exported and nothing is cleaned from these albums.

This is indeed strange. Does the old album still exist in Photos? Did you export to the same folder with --update or start with a clean export?

I would have expected --cleanup to delete the older folder. The fact that photos were exported indicates to me the old album still exists in Photos and that's why osxphotos exported them to both folders.

Find one of the problem photos in Photos and select it in the library view then run this command:

osxphotos debug-dump --dump photos --selected > debug.txt

Either send me the output to [email protected] or post here (it may contain sensitive data such as locations). That will help me figure out what's going on.

No i've checked and the old album was not in Photos anymore. I've used the command with --update. It is possible ive first transferred via SMB and in a later stage via NFS because of performance. Im now changing the SMB settings according to @oPromessa his post.

• No issues with unicode characters for albums and filenames. Some issues on Keywords but addressed by our great @RhetTbull a long while back ;).
• Do check besides Albums, if you have Projects/SlideShows with that very same name as osxphotos may also export pics from there, in case you don't filter them out in the selection you pass along to osxphotos.

SMB Performance

This debate extensively talks about SMB optimization although I'd like to point out I've gone with the initial basic setups:

• 1GB CAT6 Ethernet and a couple of hubs from Mac to NAS.
• Made sure to disable AFP
• Connect from Mac to NAS via smb://nas_server
• Don't enable logging of activity for this shared folder on the NAS.

I get shis speed (BlackMagic Disk Speed test - 1GB Files test)

Thanks for the details! Ive changed my SMB settings and doing a new transfer to check out the performance.

BlackMagic 1GB test shows around 90/105 MB/s with the new SMB settings, so thats good!

Initial transfer via SMB has been done (cabeled internal gbit to synology via SMB). Im not sure if this is slow or not, maybe I should try NFS as well.
