Problem to solve
Administrators of customer and partner accounts are accustomed to provisioning and managing SAP BTP via the SAP BTP Cockpit (=ClickOps). They recognize ClickOps is not scalable and is error prone and inconsistent.
When they try to automate, they struggle to map ClickOps tasks to btp CLI or Terraform and to confirm that automated changes truly mirror ClickOps behavior.
New team members also learn in the Cockpit first, delaying and undermining confidence in automation.
This gap reduces standardization, slows delivery, increases risk of misconfiguration, and impedes scaling. We need to enable a reliable, comprehensible path from Cockpit workflows to automation and provide confidence that automated actions are
Discovery
CoreX EPT 'Platform Automation' started evaluation how btp CLI usage could be leveraged by Cockpit interfaces.
Research
In Jan. 2026 the EPT 'Platform Automation' has done a research with customers & partners, where usability tests with low-fidelity prototypes validated the viability to invest into the integration of btp CLI and TF into BTP Cockpit.
Details of the research are available and will be shared by Christian/Ana.
Components in scope
- btp CLI
- Terraform
- SAP BTP Cockpit
Out of scope
- Other automation tooling
- Development/Integration of a web console for the btp CLI
- Development/Integration of a Terraform Automation and Collaboration Tool (TACO)
Next Steps
As the research clearly showed that integration of btp CLI and TF into SAP BTP Cockpit is valuable to solve the problem, CoreX PLT should decide how to kickoff this epic, so that the two EPTs 'Platform Automation' and 'Platform UI/AI' (BTP Cockpit) can define a minimal viable product (MVP) scope to be released.
EPT 'Platform Automation' (Terraform)
- Define MVP scope in alignment with btp CLI and SAP BTP Cockpit Team
- Specification of the defined MVP scope
- Implementation of the specified MVP scope
