    IMPORTANT: the vertical solver has been changed.
    This can lead to inconsistencies with existing applications,
    but it really should not. 
    Please try this version and report back any problems.
    This version will be slightly slower than the previsous one.
    This is only because of the extra testing code inserted.
    In the future this testing code will be removed again.
    However, I need EVERYBODY to test this new code!!!
