WINDOWS 7 support

Hi, for all the pleasure and pain windows 10 may provide, I'm still resilient to upgrade from windows 7. I tried to install your latest S.E. version on windows 7, and I get a "missing entry point" error, for "CreateDXGIFactory2" in DLL "dxgi.dll".

Could you compile the app, so that it is backwards compatible? It seems to be a matter of Qt6, you're using version 6.2.4.0 and Qt 6.6.0 DOES WORK on windows 7

Otherwise, could you state if version 1.0.16 is the latest version that will keep compatible with windows 7?

Windows 7 is legacy: current toolchains and Qt versions increasingly drop support.

We are not planning dedicated Win7 CI or guarantees. If you must stay on Win7, you may need an older tagged release and accepted security risk.

This issue can stay open as documentation / expectation or be closed as wontfix if maintainers prefer — feedback welcome.

Thanks @d4fe for the Windows 10 report and the Drive link, and for confirming 1.0.19 works on Windows 7—that matches our expectation that modern 1.1.x / Qt stacks may no longer be viable on Win7, while older builds can still work there.

To chase the Win10 problem effectively, could you add (here or in a new bug issue):

• Exact ScanTailor build (version / tag / installer vs self-built)
• Qt version if you built from source
• Whether the failure is at install time, first start, or specific workflow (with a minimal repro if possible)

Once we can reproduce on a current master build, we can treat it as a normal bugfix PR rather than mixing it with legacy Win7 expectations in this thread.

Thanks for reporting this, @d4fe.

To narrow it down we need a bit more detail:

1. Windows version (e.g. 10 22H2 / 11 24H2) and whether it is 64-bit.
2. Exact error: a screenshot or the full text from the dialog / Event Viewer if nothing appears on screen.
3. How you launch it (double‑click scantailor.exe, shortcut, run from cmd.exe, antivirus blocking, etc.).
4. If you can, try whether another build from the same release page behaves differently (e.g. installer .exe vs .zip, or an older tag you still have) and say which works or fails.

If the error is a missing DLL or “VCRUNTIME” style message, mention that verbatim — it often points to a Visual C++ Redistributable gap on the machine.

Once we have that, we can tell if it is a packaging regression for 1.1.1, an environment issue, or something to track separately from the deskew/oblique changes in development builds.

@vigri’s pointer is a good next step: please install the latest x64 Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft’s page (same major as the build that produced the zip — MSVC 170 / VS 2022 line is typical for recent CI):

After installing, reboot once (or at least sign out/in) if the error persists, then try scantailor.exe again.

Please reply here with:

• “fixed” if it launches, or
• the exact dialog text / a fresh screenshot if it still fails (and whether Windows Event Viewer → Application log shows a faulting module name).

That tells us whether to treat this as documentation (“install VC++ redist first”) vs a real packaging bug for the next release.

It worked. The only thing left for W7 is to find a solution.

@vigri Update: as maintainer I am opening the README change myself — see PR #122 (branch docs/readme-windows-vcredist-101). That supersedes my earlier reply where I offered to review if you opened a PR; this PR implements the Visual C++ Redistributable guidance and the supported Windows / legacy OS clarification we discussed in this thread.
