| 13 | + |
| 14 | +Welcome to the ninth season of reviews here on A Boy and His Beans! |
| 15 | +As noted at the end of last season, they're getting increasingly short. |
| 16 | +I'll have five reviews for you here over the next eight days, |
| 17 | +kicking off with this review from the Wakarusa Dime Store. |
| 18 | + |
| 19 | +My friends Daniel and Rebecca recently moved to northern Indiana, |
| 20 | +and they came across this store in the nearby town of Wakarusa, |
| 21 | +which claims that its jumbo jelly beans are world famous! |
| 22 | +While I have to admit that I had never heard of them, |
| 23 | +I have to give them credit for leaning so hard into this claim |
| 24 | +that they secured [jumbojellybeans.com](https://www.jumbojellybeans.com/) |
| 25 | +as the domain name for their website. |
| 26 | + |
| 27 | +Many thanks to Daniel for sending a bag of these beans for me to review! |
| 28 | + |
| 29 | + |
| 30 | +## Size and shape |
| 31 | + |
| 32 | +When reviewing a jumbo jelly bean, one goes into it knowing that |
| 33 | +the size component of this category will necessarily be |
| 34 | +judged differently from most other jelly beans. |
| 35 | +This is fine; it just means evaluating size in comparison to |
| 36 | +the other jumbos reviewed in the past. |
| 37 | + |
| 38 | +These beans are, on average, the largest I've ever reviewed, |
| 39 | +clocking in at maybe 20% bigger than |
| 40 | +[the Howe Jumbo Jelly Beans I reviewed on this day last year](/howe-jumbo-jelly-beans). |
| 41 | +That makes them just a bit too big for my liking. |
| 42 | + |
| 43 | +They make a solid effort at being bean-shaped, |
| 44 | +and consistency in both areas is strong. |
| 45 | + |
| 46 | +**4 out of 5 beans** |
| 47 | + |
| 48 | + |
| 49 | +## Chewability |
| 50 | + |
| 51 | +To reiterate what I have said before: as bean size increases, |
| 52 | +so must chewability also increase in order to maintain a pleasing experience. |
| 53 | +and the Wakarusa beans handle this quite well. |
| 54 | +The beans have enough just the right amount of substance, |
| 55 | +yielding a good chew that never becomes fatiguing. |
| 56 | + |
| 57 | +**5 out of 5 beans** |
| 58 | + |
| 59 | + |
| 60 | +## Texture |
| 61 | + |
| 62 | +Wakarusa offers a pretty classic take on jelly bean texture. |
| 63 | +I can nitpick a few things, but the overall experience is quite good. |
| 64 | +The shells are smooth, but could be a little chunkier, |
| 65 | +and the insides could be a little smoother, but avoid being gummy. |
| 66 | + |
| 67 | +**4 out of 5 beans** |
| 68 | + |
| 69 | + |
| 70 | +## Taste and flavor |
| 71 | + |
| 72 | +
|
| 73 | +
Flavors
|
| 74 | +
|
| 75 | +
:cherries: Cherry
|
| 76 | +
:orange: Orange
|
| 77 | +
:lemon: Lemon
|
| 78 | +
:green_heart: Lime
|
| 79 | +
:grapes: Grape
|
| 80 | +
:strawberry: Strawberry
|
| 81 | +
|
| 82 | +
|
| 83 | + |
| 84 | +This traditional flavor set doesn't offer anything particularly exciting, |
| 85 | +but it is a serviceable treatment in each case. |
| 86 | + |
| 87 | +Cherry is the standout here with the strongest flavor of the bunch, |
| 88 | +followed by strawberry and grape. |
| 89 | +Grape is a little medicinal, but I don't mind that. |
| 90 | +The citrus flavors would benefit from a little more acidity, |
| 91 | +but that is par for the course in this style of bean. |
| 92 | + |
| 93 | +It's a good, but unremarkable, tasting experience. |
| 94 | + |
| 95 | +**6 out of 10 beans** |
| 96 | + |
| 97 | + |
| 98 | +## The one-of-each test |
| 99 | + |
| 100 | +Perhaps the ultimate test of a bag of jelly beans is how enjoyable it is |
| 101 | +to take one of each flavor and eat them all at the same time.[^1] |
| 102 | + |
| 103 | +Per standard editorial policy, beans advertised as "giant" or "jumbo" |
| 104 | +are exempt from this category. |
| 105 | + |
| 106 | + |
| 107 | +## Conclusion |
| 108 | + |
| 109 | +Category | Score |
| 110 | +---------------- | --------------- |
| 111 | +Size and shape | **4**/5 beans |
| 112 | +Chewability | **5**/5 beans |
| 113 | +Texture | **4**/5 beans |
| 114 | +Taste and flavor | **6**/10 beans |
| 115 | +---------------- | --------------- |
| 116 | +_Total_ | **19**/25 beans |
| 117 | + |
| 118 | +Various sources report that the Wakarusa Dime Store |
| 119 | +debuted their jumbo jelly beans in 1969, in just one flavor – licorice. |
| 120 | +Their claim of being world-famous is harder to verify, |
| 121 | +but one of the co-owners said at one point that |
| 122 | +[they ship over 75 tons around the world each year](https://www.leaderpub.com/tag/wakarusa-dime-store/), |
| 123 | +which certainly strikes me as impressive. |
| 124 | + |
| 125 | +At the very least, it's an impressive triumph of marketing, |
| 126 | +but unfortunately the product itself is not quite as impressive |
| 127 | +as [the Howe jumbos I reviewed last year](/howe-jumbo-jelly-beans). |
| 128 | +I would still recommend stopping into the Wakarusa Dime Store |
| 129 | +if you like jumbo jelly beans and find yourself in the neighborhood! |
| 130 | + |
| 131 | +--- |
| 132 | + |
| 133 | +[^1]: I reserve the right to excuse certain flavors from this test that would ruin it for all the other flavors. |
