Project Description
The Chameleon Mesh Node is an open-source, solar-capable, dual-radio environmental telemetry node for long-duration
off-grid deployment. It joins a Meshtastic mesh on sub-GHz LoRa via a Seeed Wio-WM1110 (Semtech LR1110 + Nordic
nRF52840) running the upstream Meshtastic firmware, paired with a Seeed XIAO ESP32-C5 companion for Wi-Fi 6 / BLE 5 /
802.15.4 provisioning, OTA, and bulk-data offload to a passing operator's phone. An on-board Bosch BME280 publishes
temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure as Meshtastic telemetry. The two radios cohabit one ~60×40 mm 2-layer
board with explicit RF zoning and a shared ground pour, targeting <50 µA deep-sleep. KiCad 10 source, ERC/DRC-clean,
Gerbers exported; firmware ships as an incremental Meshtastic hardware variant on the upstream Wio-WM1110 base.
Tech Stack
- Meshtastic firmware (nRF52840 variant, GPL-3.0-or-later)
- KiCad 10 (hardware, CERN-OHL-S-2.0); Python headless composers + kicad-cli (MIT)
- Hardware: Seeed Wio-WM1110 (LR1110 + nRF52840), Seeed XIAO ESP32-C5, Bosch BME280, TI BQ24074
- PlatformIO (firmware build)
Message to the Organizers
Fully open-source (CERN-OHL-S hardware / GPL firmware variant / MIT tooling). First-article prototype in progress; will update with bring-up results.
