Alternate order payload for bundles

We have encountered several situations with enterprise level merchants where a bundle solution would be ideal in terms of customer experience and Shopify administration.
However, legacy ERP systems prevent the ability to implement bundles since they are expecting a single line item instead of the expanded bundle components in the order payload.
The Admin API provides the lineItemGroup property that does allow association between bundle components, but it would be ideal if there were a way to associate the opposite way: a single line item representing a bundle, with the components listed as a sub property (similar to how it's visually represented in the cart / checkout).
