About Me
This RFC is posted on behalf of the BBC.
Use Case
The MiniShelf is used to display/trigger AdLib items associated with a specific segment. These items are displayed in the Rundown view, directly beneath their associated segment.
Proposal
The MiniShelf recently received a small update to support larger thumbnails. After some evaluation, it’s clear there is also a need for a more compact view.
The proposal is to support both a compact and a larger view for these MiniShelf items, allowing users to choose the most appropriate layout for their workflow.
The default view mode of the MiniShelfs will be configurable through blueprints. The user can then switch the viewing mode per segment.
Potential Consequences
Since the items in the Buckets are based on the same component – with styling overrides for different use cases – we also propose a minor design update to these. The functionality will remain unchanged, but the updated design will improve readability, including better support for longer text in items without thumbnails.
The code modifications made for this update will affect the styling of the items in the Buckets. While the Compact viewing mode will not be available in the Buckets it would be a trivial update to add that at a later stage.
To clarify; this feature is currently being finished and it will be contributed shortly. We'd just like to make other Sofie users aware of the need to communicate this to end users currently using the Buckets feature.
Future
- The Dashboard component used for these features is in dire need of a refactor in order to better be able to skin it for the different use cases at different broadcasters.
- It would make sense to enable the MiniShelf by default, giving users easier access to Segment AdLibs.
- A nice addition would be to add a GUI element to allow users to collapse/expand each MiniShelf.
Example 1: Current MiniShelf look on top, new look underneath.
Example 2: Bucket items will also get the new look
Process
The Sofie Team will evaluate this RFC and open up a discussion about it, usually within a week.
