Since the Flatpak update away from the 4.4 Stremio version, I've had a difficult time using it. Everything freezes all the time. I've updated the system several times since then, and I've gone from release 1.0.* to 1.1.2 now, but it has not fixed my problem.
Previously, I had installed an older Flatpak package to keep 4.4, but now it's no longer available.
Most of the time it simply freezes and hangs, never closing unless forced, so it doesn't produce an error message. This happens mostly in the GUI and in interaction with elements, if I manage to get into a stream, it will run fine, until I need to either pause it, or choose the next episode, with mixed results (sometimes it just works fine)

Same here on Arch Linux with KDE/Wayland, all latest updates.

Last night it got so bad that the only way to unfreeze it was to physically power off my system. I had already tried sending every type of signal to the process to force it to end but to no avail, so I went and clicked "Power Off" from KDE's system menu. I have verbose logging and the shutdown process said it was waiting for 1.5 minutes. After those 1.5 minutes, it went to 4 minutes, saying that it was waiting on the stremio (and related) processes to respond, but they never did. It sent kill (and other termination) signals but stremio seemed to ignore them and the only way to get it to end was to physically hold down the power button on my PC.

I can probably find a log of it if needed, but it is likely similar to what others have already posted.

Edit: It happened while a show was playing. Stremio was not the focused application as it was on my second monitor.

Just had one of those freezes too. I'm on Fedora/Wayland. Tried everything but couldn't kill the stremio process, so I tried rebooting my machine. After a few minutes of it tryting to kill the process, I got a Kernel Panic. Stremio is unusable on Linux, unfortunately.

Hi! I managed to get it working with the help of an LLM, so I wouldn't recommend treating these as proper instructions. You should verify each step yourself or follow an official guide if one becomes available. This was done on my secondary machine.

What I did was:

#Check out the commit corresponding to the version I wanted:

cd com.stremio.Stremio

#Install the required Flatpak runtime dependencies:

flatpak install flathub org.kde.Platform//5.15-22.08 org.kde.Sdk//5.15-22.08 io.qt.qtwebengine.BaseApp//5.15-22.08

#Install flatpak-builder (I found it on pacman, just search your package manager):

sudo pacman -S flatpak-builder

#Build and install Stremio:

flatpak-builder --user --install --force-clean build-dir com.stremio.Stremio.json

Again, I can't guarantee these are the correct or recommended steps—I only know that this worked for me. If you're going to try this, it's worth double-checking everything first.

Hi! I managed to get it working with the help of an LLM, so I wouldn't recommend treating these as proper instructions. You should verify each step yourself or follow an official guide if one becomes available. This was done on my secondary machine.

What I did was:

#Check out the commit corresponding to the version I wanted:

#Install the required Flatpak runtime dependencies:

#Install flatpak-builder (I found it on pacman, just search your package manager):

sudo pacman -S flatpak-builder

I have identified the root cause of the freezing issue on the current version. It appears to be related to a known conflict between the NVIDIA proprietary driver, Wayland, and WebKitGTK.

I attempted several workarounds to resolve this:

1. Disable the DMA-BUF renderer (to address the common WebKitGTK crash on NVIDIA):

   flatpak override --user --env=WEBKIT_DISABLE_DMABUF_RENDERER=1 com.stremio.Stremio

2. Disable accelerated compositing mode (as a fallback to prevent thread aborts):

   flatpak override --user --env=WEBKIT_DISABLE_COMPOSITING_MODE=1 com.stremio.Stremio

   Result: While these two environment variables resolved the freezing, they made the rendering too slow for practical use.

3. Force XWayland fallback (by disabling the Wayland socket):

   flatpak override --user --nosocket=wayland com.stremio.Stremio

   Result: This resulted in no video output at all.

I also tried building Stremio natively from source on Fedora (which required some minor modifications to the source code for compatibility). While the build compiled and ran successfully, the same NVIDIA/Wayland/WebKitGTK rendering issues persisted.

As a workaround, I have switched to using stremio-service combined with the web version, as suggested by @VictorGom3s. This setup runs smoothly and properly offloads playback to the GPU. I will uninstall the Flatpak version for now and test it again in future releases.

Another option is to install stremio-service.

On Fedora: dnf install stremio-service

Then start the service and use Stremio Web.

Next, I attempted to set up the third-party Terra repository to obtain it, but the repository configuration failed to download due to a connection timeout (HTTP 522) on their server:

Fortunately, I found the official RPM package directly on the Stremio download server:
