On the Wall, marafon started a thread that in part complained about the problems caused by users who translate from a sentence in a language they don't know. Sometimes their translation is a legitimate translation of a sentence they know but that is only indirectly connected to the sentence to which they add their translation. Sometimes they simply apply machine translation/AI to the sentence in the unknown language.
frpzzd pointed out that we restrict users from writing sentences in languages not in their profiles, but we have no restriction on their translating from sentences in languages not in their profiles. I think this is an oversight. I believe that we should require that a user have a language in their profile before they can translate from it. Preventing users from accidentally or intentionally translating sentences in languages they don't know would ensure that (1) translations are added to the correct source sentence (the one that the translator knows) and (2) users are inhibited from translating sentences in languages they don't know. While they can try to get around this by falsely claiming knowledge of languages they don't know, they would have to take the extra step of putting those languages into their profile. This would allow other users to notice when they have a suspiciously long list of languages in their profile.
