User survey (Improving the user experience)

Describe the feature you want

Hello everyone,

I'm a cognitive engineer who works freelance on UX design projects. I have been an active user of NewPipe for 4-5 years now and I want to improve the user experience of the application to help the project. To do this, I want to implement the full process of user-centered design. This is why I have created a survey for current users of the app to identify how you feel about using the app and potential improvements.

If you know users who don't watch this thread, send them this survey, the more feedback I get, the better the redesign will be 😄
Of course I won't use this data for personal use, only I will have access to it and I will never send it to companies or anyone else. Evalandgo (the survey service I chose) is privacy conscious and GDPR compliant.
I will make a report of the results freely available.

If anyone wants to understand the whole process, ask me in the comments and I will edit this post (or create a new one) to explain the whole process step by step. It would also be a pleasure if people want to help me with this task / be part of the future user testing to improve the mockups we will make.

My work will contribute to the redesign of the application and improve the user experience of NewPipe.

How will you/everyone benefit from this feature?

The application could attract new users and be used by more people around the world.

Thank you for your effort! It's a good idea to get the to know our users and see how we can increase NewPipe's usability.

I have a few suggestions to improve the survey. I guess other team members might want to add a few questions, too. For this reason, I suggest to disable the survey until more people had the time to go though it. I temporarily removed the link from the description so people do not need to fill in the survey multiple times, because it was changed. Here is a screenshot of the survey page.

1: How old are you?

We also had the idea to add a "child mode" which allows parents to restrict several features. For this reason, I'd add under 13 as well. (Does this break the TOS of your survey service?)

• 30-40 years old
• 40-60 years old
• +60 years old

2: In your opinion, which answer correctly defines you?

I don't understand the purpose of those options. How is the option that one is a computer science expert comparable to being a basic user (of what?). I guess you want to collect data on how comfortable our users are with tech or their phone in general. Is that correct?

3:

Why are a few questions in past and others in present tense?

1. I use NewPipe frequently.
2. Using NewPipe is unnecessarily complex.
   (This could be evaluated in detail with a follow up text field allowing the user to enter things they find complex)
3. I thought the system was easy to use.
   (Is the purpose of this question to check the expectation of the user when before installed NewPipe or is this question the negative opposite of question 2?)
4. I think that I need the support of a technical person to be able to use NewPipe.
5. I find the various functions in this system were well integrated.
6. I think there is too much inconsistency in this system.
7. I would imagine that most people would learn to use this system very quickly.
8. I found the system very cumbersome to use.
9. I felt very confident using the system.
10. I needed to learn a lot of things before I could get going with this system.
    Do you want to collect data on whether the user needed to get used to NewPipe because NewPipe handles things different than other comparable apps?

What services do you use while on NewPipe?

It's PeerTube and not FramaTube. FramaTube is a PeerTube instance. Please add these questions right after this one

I did not know NewPipe supported multiple services (Yes / No / I don't want to answer)

You're welcome, it's my pleasure.

I'm glad you looked at the survey and want to improve it.

For the first question, I can definitely add people under 13, I had done that because it is required to be over 13 to use YouTube.

For the second question, you are right, I want to know if the user feels comfortable or not with the technology. This allows me to understand our users and to know what kind of actions I can implement in the interface (swipes...).
The third one is the SUS (System Usability Scaling) survey, it is a well-known survey that is used a lot in user-centred design because it allows to get a general feeling without bias built into the question.

Question 3:
You're right, I'm going to switch everything to the present tense

"Using NewPipe is unnecessarily complex": this could be a nice feature of course, the only problem is that I am a free user on eval&go and I am not able to do it... Another problem is that I am limited to 10 questions.
"I thought the system was easy to use": the system could be unnecessarily complex (lots of screens, lots of actions to perform before reaching something), but could be easy to use. I don't know if this is really clear but the idea is to separate the two.

"I had to learn a lot of things before I could get started with this system". : As I said before, this is part of the SUS, but the idea is to understand if the user felt they had to learn things before using the application properly.

I will change FramaTube to PeerTube, thanks.

I would like to add these questions, but it requires me to add more than 10 questions. Do you think I should replace the questions on the video page and the background player with these two?
