Is it possible to turn off the spinner on the status bar?

Instead of taking up a few characters to the left of the status, is it possible to turn of the animated spinner altogether so that it is not displayed and does not take up any characters to the left of the status?

This sets the spinner to an animated earth, but, is there an option to have no spinner at all?
