Bug: "panic: markRead: negative count" with compacted topics

Hi Team,

We are encountering an error that is detailed in the following GitHub issue:
segmentio/kafka-go#1393

We've researched this and found two potential solutions. It appears that a community member has already contributed a fix, but it hasn't been merged or addressed by the maintainers yet. Fixes #874 #1292

As an alternative, we are considering replacing the segmentio/kafka-go library with IBM/sarama.

What are your thoughts on this approach? We would appreciate any advice you could offer.
