No system tray icon on linux with 8.1.3

Traceback and/or steps to reproduce

System: Fedora 42

- start it

notice there's no system tray icon for tribler, along side other tray icons

Thanks for the report! I'll fire up a virtual machine to try and figure out what is happening. This might take a little while (the internals of x11/Wayland/dbus + Flatpak stuff are a bit complex).

On a Fedora 41 upgraded to 42, the tray icon works.
On a fresh Fedora 42, it didn't.

I can reproduce this on a fresh Fedora 42. That is a promising start to figuring out what is going wrong.

Alright, I have it working. However, this is not something we can fix in Tribler. This requires three steps from you¹. I assume you already did the first step. Please let me know if this works for you (or not).

First, I had to first install the Extension Manager from the Software application (which I assume you already have). Concretely, this one:

Second, I clicked "Install" on the following page to install "AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem Support":

Third, and last, I had to go into my Extension Manager and slide the button to be enabled on the "AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem Support" extension (it defauled to "off" for me):

Welp. That broke right after I posted the workaround above. I now also see the "Unsupported..." button. I'll look at this again.

Hold on, there is hope. I think I simply missed a step in my previous description. I think part of the steps that I thought were "extra", were actually required.

In particular, this magic from https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/615/appindicator-support/:

1. Install the package from DNF if not yet
   sudo dnf install gnome-shell-extension-appindicator

2. Create a symlink to user's home dir:
   ln -s /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/appindicatorsupport@rgcjonas.gmail.com ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/appindicatorsupport@rgcjonas.gmail.com

3. Log out + log in

I'll wipe my system and reinstall the whole OS (for a third time 🙂) to make sure.

EDIT: To answer my own question. No, that's not the only missing step. There's more to it. On to the fourth OS reinstall 🚀

Ok, these are the ten steps to get it working during my 6th clean system wipe (square brackets denote the software to enter the command in or to use):

1. Install Fedora 42
2. [Software] Install pending Software updates
3. [Software] Install Extensions Manager & start Extensions Manager
4. Restart machine
5. [Terminal] Execute sudo dnf install gnome-shell-extension-appindicator
6. [Software] Install Tribler
7. [Terminal] Execute mkdir -p ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/
8. [Terminal] Execute ln -s /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/appindicatorsupport@rgcjonas.gmail.com ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/appindicatorsupport@rgcjonas.gmail.com
9. Restart machine
10. [Terminal] Execute gnome-extensions enable appindicatorsupport@rgcjonas.gmail.com

Afterward, Tribler launches with a tray icon for me (it might be possible to do this in less steps).
