Changing the associated browser and profile to open the GUI

Hello,

Tribler's GUI works (only) with the default browser and profile. I want to change that behavior and create a new profile that is dedicated to Tribler, but I couldn't find an option to chage the associated browser and profile in the GUI or the configuration file.

If I haven't missed something and it's not currently supported, please consider providing such an option.

There is a way to change your preferred browser by setting the BROWSER environment variable. I documented more details here: #8604 (comment) (these instructions are for Windows, but you can do take the same approach for Mac and Linux).

Thanks, but unfortunately, that method didn't work for me. I could change the browser Tribler opened from Firefox to Edge by adding an environment variable as you suggested for testing, but it doesn't seem to support additional parameters for changing profiles of the same browser.

My default browser is already Firefox. What I want to do is using a new (and non-default) Firefox profile dedicated to Tribler.

Adding the BROWSER variable with the value "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -P Tribler or C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe -P Tribler doesn't work. Tribler is still opened with the default Firefox profile.

I still believe that it would be better if Tribler had a native support for defining the path of the browser and profile it works with.

Are you setting that as the environment variable itself? Windows won't allow that. What works for me is the following.

Create a new file called tribler_profile.bat in C:\Tribler, filled with the following contents:

"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -P Tribler %1

Then I set the BROWSER environment variable to C:\Tribler\tribler_profile.bat.

I managed to associate Tribler with a new profile as you suggested, but this time, it gives a cookie error.

Tribler may not be running or your browser is missing a cookie.
In latter case please re-open Tribler from the system tray

Re-opening doesn't work. Copying the key from configuration.json and adding it to http://127.0.0.1:50604/ui/#/downloads/all?key= works, but it happens every time browser opens. How can we make the cookie persistent? Is it possible to automate importing the key?

That should already happen by default. I'll schedule this for investigation: there may be something broken in Tribler.

As a workaround, you can set the api_key cookie in your Tribler firefox profile to persist your API key as well.
