We debated and discussed this at length. We felt we did not have the resources, given the difficulties with CMIP5 data, to reorganise the CMIP5 data into the new format. There are sites that will carry on serving, providing access to that data even though not part of ESGF NG. [ It is still accessible and usable but not discoverable through ESGF NG].
