Release buildable source archives

Currently it's impossible to build release from source without cloning source repository including submodules:

• Archive attached to release doesn't include submodules
• version.py script requires git metadata to be available

Are there plans to fix this?

I suppose that would require some kind of make dist step to produce a tar archive that was more than just a git snaphot (which is what github gives you by default).

Seems like a reasonable feature. Would you have any interest in working a PR for this?

I'm currently too busy putting everything else on my project together, maybe I will come back to it when cleaning up.
