Better Stronghold vs Vanilla Stronghold generation changes

Hi, I noticed the Better Stronghold generation doesn't seem to follow the same rules as vanilla strongholds, are there still 128 or can there be more ?

Can confirm it doesn't follow the same rules.

1. Better Strongholds seem to be more restricted in their Y level (I've only seen them between -36 and 1), as opposed to vanilla strongholds that can generate at any Y level underground.

2. Better Strongholds do seem to generate within the same rings as vanilla Java and usually in the same amounts, but they are not generated at equal angles within a given ring like Java vanilla strongholds are. In vanilla the 3 strongholds in ring 1 generate at roughly 120 degrees from each other, but I've seen Better Strongholds with as little as 11 DEGREES of separation, and 950 blocks apart. If your PC can handle large render distances , you'd be able to see both strongholds from one position.
   2.1 Additionally, 85 degrees seems by far the most common direction for a Better Stronghold to generate.

3. Better Strongholds sometimes generate without a portal room. On a server with friends, the stronghold closest to my base straight up has no portal room, with no other structures nearby that could've prevented it from generating.

4. Eyes of Ender and the /locate command massively favour west and then north over east and south when looking for Better Strongholds, with a ratio of up to (or maybe even higher than) 32x more preference for the former two directions. It prioritises west over north, as even when standing more south than a stronghold that is close to my east, /locate still point towards the stronghold way further away to the west.

So to answer your question:
From what I've seen so far, the limit is still 128 but it can generate fewer than that if you're unlucky.

Yeah that tracks with what I've noticed, but I've also found that rings can have MORE strongholds than vanilla, my world had 4 in the first ring. And since apparently there are infinite rings I think there might be more than 128 but I've been to lazy to check since they're so hard to locate compared to vanilla ones.

I stumbled upon this today too. I wanted to have three strongholds for my modpack and figured that adding max_ring_section: 1 to the stronghold.json in /structure_set/ in the form of a datapack will do just that.
And well, to the surprise of noone, nothing is ever easy.

It does only generate the first ring, but turns out the mod doesn't care how many strongholds generate on the rings. If I set the rings to have a thickness of 500, it's gonna keep generating strongholds as long as it checks the spacing: and separation: values.
The default settings of spacing: 85, separation: 50 and ring_chunk_thickness: 96 yield either 1 or 2 strongholds for me, depending on the seed. (With the addition of max_ring_section: 1)

Would be cool to have something like count: like it works for vanilla strongholds, to make sure it does generate the exact amount you tell it to. Not sure why Yung would even change that, probably to make it easier for the mod to generate strongholds past the vanilla ring cap.
