Database connections - lazy?

Just wondering if we can implement lazy database connections everywhere, reducing the amount of unneeded, open connections.
This might be a php-issue, I assume Java would share an existing connection between threads and initialize it as late as possible otherwise, @Maurice-Betzel ?
