how does multiplayer work?

hi im confused of how the multiplayer works

im trying to invite my friend but idk how he can join the server when i hit launch

It's mostly meant for playing over local network. It's possible to make it work over the internet, but the hosting player must have a public IP address and setup a port forwarding on his router. Also, in anything else than Zandronum the networking engine is not designed to handle high latency and packet loss, so you may have a bad experience.
