Stellar Wallet Authentication - Complete Testing Guide

Assignment: Issue #45 - Stellar Wallet Authentication (Full Login Flow)
Status: ✅ IMPLEMENTATION COMPLETE

📋 Pre-Testing Setup Checklist

Before running any tests, ensure you have completed the following:

✅ Step 1: Install Dependencies

cd c:\Users\HomePC\Documents\D\Codely
npm install
# or if using pnpm:
pnpm install

This will install the newly added stellar-sdk dependency required for Stellar signature verification.

✅ Step 2: Configure Environment Variables

Create or update .env.local file in the project root:

Generate a secure JWT_SECRET:

✅ Step 3: Setup Database

Execute the database migration to create authentication tables:

# Connect to your PostgreSQL database and run the SQL scripts:

# 2. Then run the authentication tables migration

✅ Step 5: Create Test Accounts

  1. Freighter:

    • Click the Freighter extension icon
    • Create a new account (save the seed phrase safely!)
    • Switch network to "Testnet"
    • Get test XLM from: https://friendbot.stellar.org/
  2. Albedo:


🧪 Test Execution

TEST 1: Wallet Connection and Authentication Flow

Objective: Verify that users can connect their Stellar wallet and receive a JWT token.

Prerequisites:

  • Development server running: npm run dev
  • Freighter or Albedo wallet installed/accessible
  • Navigate to: http://localhost:3000

Steps:

  1. Open http://localhost:3000 in your browser
  2. Locate the "Connect Wallet" button in the navbar (top right)
  3. Click "Connect Wallet"
  4. A dialog appears with wallet options: "🚀 Freighter" and "💳 Albedo"
  5. Select "Freighter" (or "Albedo" if Freighter not installed)
  6. For Freighter:
    • Freighter extension popup appears
    • Review the connection request
    • Click "Approve" to allow connection
  7. For Albedo:
    • New browser tab opens with Albedo login
    • Log in with your Albedo account
  8. Wallet will prompt you to sign a message with the nonce
  9. Review the signing request: "Sign this nonce to login to Codely: [hex-string]"
  10. Sign the message by clicking "Sign" in your wallet

Expected Results:

  • ✅ Wallet connects successfully
  • ✅ Navbar shows shortened wallet address (e.g., GXXX...XXXX)
  • ✅ "Connect Wallet" button changes to show wallet address and a "Disconnect" option
  • ✅ No errors in browser console
  • ✅ No network errors in DevTools

Verification Steps:

  1. Open browser DevTools (F12 → Console)
  2. Check localStorage:

TEST 2: Create Snippet with Authentication

Objective: Verify that authenticated users can create snippets with ownership tracking.

Prerequisites:

  • Test 1 completed successfully
  • User authenticated with wallet
  • Wallet address visible in navbar

Steps:

  1. Navigate to http://localhost:3000 (if not already there)
  2. Click "Add Snippet" button
  3. Fill in the snippet form:
    • Title: Test Snippet 1
    • Language: Select JavaScript
    • Code: Paste any sample code
    • Tags: Add at least one tag (e.g., testing)
  4. Click "Save Snippet"

Expected Results:

  • ✅ Snippet is created successfully
  • ✅ Snippet appears in the snippet list
  • ✅ Snippet is associated with your wallet address (owner field in DB)
  • ✅ No authentication errors in response

Verification in DevTools:

  1. Open DevTools → Network tab
  2. Look for the POST /api/snippets request
  3. Check request headers - should include:
    Authorization: Bearer eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9...
    
  4. Check response (should be 201 Created):

TEST 3: Verify Nonce Generation (Replay Attack Prevention)

Objective: Verify that nonces are properly generated and validated, preventing replay attacks.

Prerequisites:

  • Terminal access to the project directory

Steps:

  1. Generate first nonce:

  2. Save the nonce from the response (you'll need it for the next steps)

  3. Test nonce expiration:

    • Wait 15+ minutes
    • Try to use the same nonce in /api/auth/verify
    • Should receive: 401 - Invalid or expired nonce

Expected Results:

  • ✅ Each call to /api/auth/nonce generates a unique nonce
  • ✅ Nonces are 64 characters (32 bytes hex)
  • ✅ Nonces include message format for wallet signing
  • ✅ Expired nonces are rejected

TEST 4: Verify JWT Token Validation

Objective: Verify that JWT tokens are properly validated on protected routes.

Prerequisites:

  • User authenticated from Test 1
  • Have valid JWT token from localStorage

Steps:

  1. Test with valid token:

  4. Test with expired token:

    • Modify the token's expiration claim (edit the JWT payload)
    • Send request with modified token
    • Expected: 401 Unauthorized - Token expired

Expected Results:

  • ✅ Valid tokens grant access (201)
  • ✅ Missing tokens are rejected (401)
  • ✅ Invalid tokens are rejected (401)
  • ✅ Expired tokens are rejected (401)

TEST 5: Middleware Authentication on Protected Routes

Objective: Verify that the Next.js middleware properly enforces authentication.

Prerequisites:

  • Development server running
  • Middleware enabled and configured

Steps:

  1. Test POST to /api/snippets without auth:

Expected Results:

  • ✅ Middleware blocks POST requests without valid JWT
  • ✅ Middleware allows GET requests without JWT (public read)
  • ✅ Middleware allows POST with valid JWT
  • ✅ Error messages are clear and informative

TEST 6: User Logout and Session Invalidation

Objective: Verify that users can properly log out and invalidate their sessions.

Prerequisites:

  • User authenticated from Test 1
  • Valid JWT token available

Steps:

  1. Click "Disconnect" button in navbar (where wallet address is shown)

  2. Verify logout:

    • Wallet address disappears from navbar
    • "Connect Wallet" button appears again
    • localStorage is cleared:

  3. Try to use old token after logout:

TEST 7: Signature Verification Security

Objective: Verify that only valid signatures are accepted.

Prerequisites:

  • Terminal access
  • Recent nonce value

Steps:

  1. Generate a nonce:

  2. Try verification with wrong signature:

Expected Results:

  • ✅ Invalid signatures are rejected
  • ✅ Wrong public keys are detected
  • ✅ Missing fields are validated
  • ✅ Clear error messages guide users

TEST 8: Backward Compatibility with Existing Users

Objective: Verify that existing snippets without owners still work.

Prerequisites:

  • Database contains snippets created before this update
  • Some snippets have NULL owner field

Steps:

  1. Query for existing snippets:

    curl http://localhost:3000/api/snippets
  2. Verify that snippets load correctly even if they have NULL owner

  3. Create a new snippet as authenticated user:

    • Follow Test 2 steps
    • Verify new snippet has owner field populated
  4. List snippets again:

    curl http://localhost:3000/api/snippets

Expected Results:

  • ✅ Old snippets without owners still display
  • ✅ New snippets have owners
  • ✅ GET /api/snippets works for both
  • ✅ No database errors for NULL owners
  • ✅ Backward compatibility maintained

✅ Completion Checklist

After completing all tests, verify the following:

  • TEST 1: Wallet connection successful with JWT token issued
  • TEST 2: Snippet creation authenticated and owner tracked
  • TEST 3: Nonces generated, expire after 15 min, prevent replay
  • TEST 4: JWT validation works for all token states
  • TEST 5: Middleware properly enforces authentication
  • TEST 6: Logout invalidates sessions properly
  • TEST 7: Signature verification rejects invalid data
  • TEST 8: Backward compatibility maintained

🐛 Troubleshooting

Issue: "Freighter wallet not detected"

Solution:

  1. Install Freighter extension from https://www.freighter.app/
  2. Refresh the page after installation
  3. Ensure Freighter is set to Testnet

Issue: "Failed to get authentication nonce"

Solution:

  1. Check that DATABASE_URL is set correctly in .env.local
  2. Verify database connection works: psql $DATABASE_URL -c "SELECT 1"
  3. Ensure login_nonces table exists
  4. Check server logs for database errors

Issue: "Invalid signature"

Solution:

  1. Ensure the exact message from nonce is being signed (don't modify it)
  2. Verify public key matches wallet address
  3. Check that wallet is using correct Stellar network (testnet)

Issue: "Token expired" after logout

Solution:

  1. This is expected behavior - old tokens should be invalid
  2. Simply re-authenticate with wallet

Issue: CORS or network errors

Solution:

  1. Ensure development server is running on http://localhost:3000
  2. Check NEXT_PUBLIC_APP_URL is set correctly
  3. Verify no firewall is blocking requests

Issue: Database migration failed

Solution:

  1. Verify database connection: psql $DATABASE_URL
  2. Check table names match the migration script
  3. Ensure user has CREATE TABLE permissions
  4. Run migration again: psql $DATABASE_URL -f scripts/add-auth-tables.sql
