Enhancement: add molex header

Hey,

This design is in my opinion the most advanced and versatile custom riser. But when coming to my new project, it's missing a molex header: I want to make a mini full ssd mini nas, and thanks to the pcie spec, we can go up to 75 watts. Let's say with a fan and an hba or a classical sata extender, we still have around 60w available, which would easily fit 4 ssd sata drives (after roughly 33% of convertion loss 40w, 16w in 5v) pulling 3w max each!

I know the pci spec only provides 12v and 3.3v, while ssd requires 5v line. Do you think it's achievable to have this 12->5v converter on the board, or it's too difficult, and stealing the 5v live from a capacitor placeholder on the board is better?

While 12V->5V conversion may sound "trivial", there is a lot that can go wrong and adding say a voltage regulator will definitely add noise. Given that few people will actually use it, I'd suggest that you get a dedicated 12->5V solution, enclosed in a metal shield to try to minimize noise.

Hi @Chuckame, I'm glad you like my riser! As @thinrope says, adding a 12V to 5V regulator is not a simple task, and not something I have experience or confidence to make reliable at this point in time. You would have to wire up an external 12V to 5V module to the header already present on the riser, or use the 5V point available on the mainboard.
