Usage of AsyncLocal in a Singleton

Hello,
I noticed that the CorrelationId (and other services) is managed via a Singleton with AsyncLocal. Why was this choice made instead of using a property in a scoped service ? Are there cases where a scoped service would not work, and where AsyncLocal is necessary ? If so, could you please provide examples of those cases ? Are there also any performance considerations that justify this approach ?

AsyncLocal can span multiple DI scopes, while scoped service cannot.
