Other sites could query ours by ORCID lookup, for instance.

On a more serious note, I am a little concerned that the number of files we generate on each build will become a problem at some point, and this might easily add a couple of ten-thousands.

I was assuming that redirects got compiled into a giant .htaccess file or something.

That doesn't seem desirable, given that .htaccess files are evaluated on every request AFAIK and the Apache docs even advise against using them at all, for performance reasons.

There may be other features we can use, though, depending on our level of access to the server configuration, like rewrite maps. I've never really looked into this before.
