Kernel panic on M1 MacBook Pro

I'm having kernel panics on M1 MacBook Pro afer upgrade to Sequoia 15.4 when connected to VPN with openfortivpn. Looks like the tread starts to build on macrumors.

Crash happens multiple times a day. Could you have a look?

A kernel panic is a kernel bug. Not much we can do about it.

It is well known openfortivpn source code requires some upgrades. These upgrades might help work around that kernel panic. Still, it is a kernel bug.

Yes, some teammates and I have the same problem.
It seems to have started after the latest macOS update.
It doesn't happen with the official client, but I understand that it's a macOS kernel problem, because a program running in user space shouldn't be able to cause a kernel panic.

I have the same issue. It happens when I copy files from my local computer to a k8s pod. The kernel panic happens almost surely between 100M and 5G of uploaded material.

So I installed the dreadful official forticlient. So far, the kernel panic has not occurred.
One dataset of 5.1 G is successfully transferred, and another one of 24 GB too.

So, although I get this is a bug in an Apple kernel extension, it can be circumvented by a VPN client (probably by good luck).

Support for setting routes and DNS parameters needs to be updated,not only on macOS but also on Linux. Modifying /etc/resolv.conf doesn't cut it nowadays.

Investigating this issue as such doesn't make sense. Efforts should be made to:

1. find how to set network parameters in a VPN client (Apple developer documentation on the subject is nonexistent or not publicly available),
2. implement the above.

I suggest we close this incident.

Is there any way we could dump network parameters on official client and openfortivpn client for comparison? Would that help?

I seem to recall we already have a dump of network parameters, but it could help.

However, the real issues are as follows:

• We have been looking for new maintainers for a long time.
• The Apple documentation on the subject is (or was last time I had a look) totally insufficient. I wouldn't know how to set the network parameters on macOS.
• We (or at least I) don't have an Apple machine to test.

Same issue on M3 Macbook Pro - started with MacOS 15.4.x.
Everything worked fine until I tried 4GB file upload. After 15-30sec got kernel panic and reboot. Retried few more times, but same error.

Retried with Fortinet SSL VPN (https://www.fortinet.com/support/product-downloads#vpn) and everything worked fine.

No need to add more "me too" comments. At this point, it has become clear that:

• this issue impacts many if not all macOS users,
• Apple need to fix the macOS kernel bug (do not hesitate to report it to Apple customer support),
• the way openfortivpn updates routing and name resolution parameters needs to be improved, perhaps by adopting vpnc-script (help is welcome).

Does anybody know whether the issue still exists on macos 26 (tahoe)? It will be released today, but the betas have been in circulation for quite a while.
