[Bug]: Downloads are broken for 0.14.0-beta

What was the Problem?

The download of the media is broken as of mobile app version 0.14.0-beta.

The download starts, downloads all files, the UI shows download complete processing, then the message disappears but the download button is still there and nothing happens. Clicking on the button again causes red message with download already started message to show up. The app occupies quite a bit of storage after this failed download. Server logs shows invalid range requests.

Steps to Reproduce the Issue

1. Go to the book detail page
2. Click download button
3. Notification shows up, wait (kept the screen awake to make sure its not issue with android stopping the app)
4. After the download completes the UI shows "Download complete. Processing" (dont remember the exact wording)
5. The Processing message box goes away and nothing happens (the download button does not disappear)
6. Clicking on download again causes the red "Download already started for this media entity" to show up and that is it.

MP3: In the downloading UI (the queue) the items do not disappear as they reach 100%, they seem to get stuck at 100% (not sure how it was before as I usually download m4b audiobooks). The behavior looks the same to me for both mp3 and m4b.

When I then kill the app and open it again there is the circle with items in queue, but no new notification shows up, the items are all at 100%.

No green check mark showed next to the completed items in the queue.

What was Expected?

I expected the app do download and correctly process the file as in older version.

Might be related #1963 as I encountered similar logs

Downloading to internal app storage.

After upgrading to the new android app version I had issue that the download wouldn't event start, I would just click download, confirm the dialog and nothing would happen, no notification would show. Clicking again triggered download already started. Fixed that by clearing all app data. But the download now does not complete.

Tried reinstalling the app, did not help.

Downloading fails for both m4b and mp3 audiobooks.

Downloaded data stays in the app storage as the app now takes 0.91 GB after my test.

In the server log what looks interesting to me that there is info about finished download followed by the invalid range requests.

There is a similar bug for me on 0.14.0-beta: Downloads do not even start.

1. Click on download
2. Answer where to download to and accept the dialog asking if you want to do this.
3. See no download progress or anything, you can click it again.
4. Kill the app (paused playback before so stop any background tasks)
5. Retry step 1 and it works (including playback). m4b files in my case.

It seems like if I do anything else (like playback) it will break the download functionality until restarting the app on android. This used to be no issue at all.

(not even sure how I've gotten into beta on android)

Same issue except killing the app and trying again does not work. Downloads are fully broken for me. I'm on Android 17 on a Pixel 9, build CP2A.260805.005.

Confirming the issue is happening on Galaxy Fold6 build version F956USQS4DZG3.

The close and click download workaround was successful for me. After getting one download going I was able to continue as normal even if starting playback of another book, both stream or local playback.

using podman with audiobookshelf v2.36.0 and on android 0.14.0-beta.

I restarted the container and still was unable to download. I updated to latest version, restored from backup and the app still was unable to download. I click download, selected location and it just din't do anything. I cleared cache on the app and same issue. I uninstalled the app and logged in again and finally was able to download again. Was weird cause I been able to download then it stopped until I did the steps above.

Same issue as others however when I reinstalled the app the server I wanted to use was missing, upon relogging in to that server I was able to download but still wondering why everyone got enrolled on to a beta??

After this fix the background downloads do seem to work nicely however (instead of the old app getting stuck).

Similar issue here, downloads wont start, no bacground task is showing up.
Still does not work after app reinstall, however it works with other client apps

I hit this on 0.14.0-beta as well: confirm the download dialog, then nothing starts. The server is fine — GET /api/items/:id/file/:ino/download returns 200 and the full file.

The 0.14.0 Android download rewrite (#1937) streams into a staging .part file and resumes with:

.apply { if (existingBytes > 0L) header("Range", "bytes=$existingBytes-") }

in InternalDownloadManager. If that staging file is already the full size (or larger), this sends Range: bytes=<filesize>-. That range is not satisfiable, so the server returns 416 with Content-Range: bytes */<filesize> — the same log line as in the original report.

There is a 416 handler when existingBytes == expectedSize, but:

1. the invalid Range is still sent, so the server still errors;
2. if expectedSize is 0, or the .part is larger than the server file, 416 is treated as a hard fail;
3. after that, AbsDownloader.downloadLibraryItem finds the item still in the queue and returns "Download already started for this media entity", with no way to recover without clearing app data.

PR #1953 already retries a stuck queue item and restarts on 416. A smaller extra change that avoids the 416 entirely: do not send Range when the local file is already complete, and on 416 either accept a complete local file or delete the .part and retry from byte 0.

Separately, the new DownloadService is a dataSync foreground service. If POST_NOTIFICATIONS is denied (common on HyperOS / Xiaomi), some OEMs kill that service immediately. That matches “confirm dialog, no notification, nothing downloads” until the app is force-stopped.

Workaround until a release: stay on 0.13.0-beta, or force-stop the app and start the download before playing anything.

I'm getting the same as others. Some titles download correctly without issue and are added to my local media. Others download, but they don't complete and are not added. The download button returns, but the red "Download already started for this media entity" appears at the bottom of the screen.

When I force close and restart the client the download progress circle returns, this is the list. Looks like it is stalling on the cover art.

I force stopped the app and restarted the docker container; no change.
