Incremental Compilation

Hello.

So, I have tried installing ada_language_server (alr install ada_language_server) and it hung up twice at two different spots (after hours of running), and now this last time it complained about the lack of usage of --force (even though I have the latest gnat tool chain selected). I removed gcc-ada via my package manager and I am trying it again, but it is extremely time consuming.

This seems to happen at various other projects, too. I tried to build a simple Hello World example depending on gnatcoll, and it built gnatcoll prior to that, when I believe I have already built it plenty of times (the same version, too).

So, what am I missing here or is it really working like this currently?

By default, builds of dependencies that use the same exact configuration are reused. For that, a build would have to succeed, though.

The root crate being installed is compiled every time. This is a possible enhancement.

Still, it is strange that it's taking hours (although ada_language_server is certainly heavy). I would try to alr get ada_language_server it and alr build it in the retrieved folder. If that succeeds, just alr install.

So, I installed markdown first, it was successful. Now when I typed alr install ada_language_server, it builds markdown again, why is that?

Additionally, I noticed an oddity. At first I got the warning:

error: Release gnat_native=15.1.2 has another version already installed:

error:    Forcing this install will overwrite the release already installed. (This error can be overridden with --force.)

So what I did was just remove ~/.alire and did alr install gnat gprbuild.

That gave me this:

Just this alone confuses me. Why did it download 15.1.0 instead of 15.1.2?

Regardless, installing markdown was successful after this, yet when I am attempting to install ada_language_server, it re-built markdown for some reason (same version IIRC), despite it already having been built and installed via alr install.

Thoughts?

Additionally, if installing ada_language_server succeeds, and I type alr install ada_language_server, it is not supposed to rebuild anything again, right? I will let you know if it does. If it does, then it is a limitation and something to be improved in the future? I did expect it to not rebuild markdown, but it may have had a different version for all I know. I will wait for alr install ada_language_server to finish and I will re-run it again after it has successfully been installed.

It is still annoying though that it attempts to rebuild all dependencies once they have been built. At any rate, we will see.

It takes a long time because ada_language_server has a lot of heavy dependencies which get rebuilt each time, similarly to how it rebuilt markdown for some reason. I intentionally, and successfully installed markdown prior to attempting to install ada_language_server, but to my surprise it did rebuild markdown again.

If I do alr get, alr build, and then alr install, then it is not supposed to rebuild its dependencies, right? I would hope that re-running a simple alr install ada_language_server will not re-build everything again, but we have yet to see that. If it does, then the 3-steps are the workaround for that, for the time being at least. Is this correct?
