Cardinal points misplaced

N-E-W-S are rotated by 90° clockwise. I expect N to be upwards.

Thanks for pointing this out! The compass orientation is following the standard ROS ENU convention.

As stated in REP 103 – Rotation Representation:

"By the right-hand rule, the yaw component of orientation increases as the child frame rotates counter-clockwise, and for geographic poses, yaw is zero when pointing east.
This differs from a traditional compass bearing, which is zero when pointing north and increments clockwise."

So the current visualization (with East up) is consistent with ROS coordinate conventions.

Interesting, I never noticed that clause.
That said, wouldn't be better then to rotate the whole display by 90 degrees, to have North up? Something without North up in a graphical representation is for sure uncommon.

That makes sense — having North up would definitely be more intuitive. I’ll plan to update the compass display accordingly.
