Filtering the left panel lines

Describe the feature you would like to see

It would be handy to be able to filter the lines shown on the left panel. It is especially useful to simplify the panel viewing experience when running a large number of containers.

In terms of user interface it could be a "filter field" where string can by typed and a button on the right would clear the field.

The behaviour would be that every time the contents of the filter field changes, the list of lines is updated according to the following rules :

• If the filter field is empty, all lines are shown (same behaviour as the current version)
• If the filter field is not empty, only the lines matching the input are shown. In terms of matching it could be a simple substring match (show a line if the typed filter is a contained as a substring in the line of text).

The filter would work the same way, whether the left panel shows "Hosts and Containers" or "Services and Stacks".

I am always a fan of adding features that would benefit those with many containers. However, I am cautious about introducing new features that might clutter the UI or create confusion, especially if a feature overlaps with existing ones. Many issues revolve around how to accomplish tasks. For this specific feature request, I believe there are already a few solutions that serve similar purposes. Here are some existing options:

1. There is already a search function that works flawlessly. I have invested significant effort into enabling keyboard shortcuts.
2. There are also custom groups and pinned containers. While I understand your use case for temporary filtering, these options may suffice.
3. The UI automatically groups services, stacks, and compose files.

I have a few questions for you:

1. Is the current search function not sufficient?
2. Even if a filter option were available, having a search box for searching and another for filtering could be confusing. Some adjustments would be necessary to simplify the UI.
3. What is your specific use case? How many containers do you have? Is there a logical grouping that could be applied to make navigation easier instead of relying solely on filtering?

Since I don't have much time to spend on this project, I am selfishly particular about enhancements. 😅

Thank you for a very thorough response. I agree that adding features is a delicate balance and software should not be confusing.

To answer your questions.

1. The search function is very handy and quick to use as it is.
2. Not a question, but I agreee.
3. I have a 6 node Swarm cluster with 72 stacks and 186 containers with more to come. I could definitely do without this feature, but the only "problem" is that I have to scroll a lot to find what I want. Typing in a few characters would reduce the list to fit on a single page, so no scrolling and no typing, just click on the stack name.

To give a bit more context, I have several stacks for the same applications: stacks named development_app1, qualification_app1, production_app1 (actually there are 7 environments of the app in total). In between these stacks I have other applications (app2, app3, ...), so the app stacks are scattered all over the list. By typing "app1" I could create a quick list to see them all. I hope this clarifies the use case.

Anyway, just take this as food for thought. I'm very happy with Dozzle the way it is. It is a great app. Thanks again for you work.

Let me ponder about this a little more. If I don't think it's something I'll personally work on, I'll move it to discussion.

I don't hate this idea, but given the number of issues that keep arising, I don't think I will have the time to dedicate to it. Generally, I leave things I plan to work on open; otherwise, I move them to discussion.

If you have the technical skills to handle this, I'm open to it. I believe the search box needs a bit of redesign, and there could be an icon for filtering next to the list.
