New Blist site not working nor is Examplesite

Hi,
Followed the instructions to create a new site.
Tried 2 methods, used git clone and also downloaded the zip file.

• the site comes up but without the images. I played around moving the images folder under /public (its in the home directory by default), but that did not work either
• only the titles come up, the demo site has blog entries and they are missing in the Examplesite.
• i created a blog dir with some entries.md files and clicking on the menu did not go there. Nor were the files build by Hugo.
• the Examplesite/public/index.html seems to be fine, but i can't make the npm or hugo server work to replicate the demo site
