Hi, I'm Meow P from @MontageSubs, a young Chinese subtitle community. We're still getting started, but we enjoy solving problems and sharing solutions. These tools came from real workflow challenges we faced, and we hope they might help the broader subtitle community.
Tool One: ASS Subsetter — Font Subsetting & Embedding
This is a browser-based font embedding tool, and we may be the first to bring this to the browser. It packages fonts into your ASS/SSA subtitle files so you don't have to worry about display inconsistencies across different devices. Whether it's Android TV or any other platform, your subtitles will look the same (thanks libass).
This is especially important for CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) subtitle creation. These languages contain tens of thousands of characters, and embedding a whole font file can be massive. Our tool embeds only the characters you actually use in your subtitles, which cuts down file size significantly.
It's just as helpful for English and other languages. You can quickly embed fonts into your subtitles without needing to distribute font files separately.
Tool Two: SVG to ASS Draw Converter — Vector Graphics Conversion
This one was built by @NickCollect, an experienced subtitle typesetter and translator from our community. ASS/SSA subtitle format does support vector graphics commands, but the format is complex and incompatible with mainstream design tools. This converter lets you:
Design freely in professional tools like Adobe Illustrator and Inkscape
Convert your finished SVGs to ASS/SSA format with one click
Bring beautiful vector graphics into your subtitle typesetting
About How They Work
Everything runs in your browser with no data sent anywhere, and they work offline too. We've designed them with accessibility in mind. They're on GitHub Pages and available in 10 languages, so if you spot any translation issues, we'd welcome your help.
