Electrodragon ESP32-C3-WROOM LED Trouble controlling ws2812b strip

I am working with https://templates.blakadder.com/electrodragon_NWI1124.html I am able to control RGB strips with no issue. I have set the jumpers as indicated to control ws2812. I am only able to get the first 2 leds to come on with power commands. I am using a small strip of 11 pixels with a 5v 2 amp power supply. Pixel commands or Led commands are not recognized in the console. I notice on the esp8266 version of this board there is an alternative template for the ws2812 strip control. Is that needed for this? when I input commands to change leds its very wonky. I have to disconnect the data line and plug it back up before it responds. some commands like color 00ff00 are changing the colors of the light. The wiring matches the diagram. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.
